Terry Tamminen

From his youth in Australia to career experiences in Europe, Africa, China and across the United States, Terry has developed expertise in business, farming, education, non-profit, the environment, the arts, and government. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger appointed him Secretary of the California Environmental Protection Agency and later Cabinet Secretary, the Chief Policy Advisor to the Governor, where Terry was the architect of many groundbreaking sustainability policies, including California's landmark Global Warming Solutions Act of 2006, the Hydrogen Highway Network, and the Million Solar Roofs initiative.
In 2010 Terry co-founded the R20 Regions of Climate Action, a new public-private partnership, bringing together sub-national governments; businesses; financial markets; NGOs; and academia to implement measurable, large-scale, low-carbon and climate resilient economic development projects that can simultaneously solve the climate crisis and build a sustainable global economy. Since 2007 he has provided advice to Pegasus Capital Advisors and numerous global businesses on sustainability and “green” investing. In 2016, Terry joined the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation as CEO. An accomplished author, Terry's books include Cracking the Carbon Code: The Keys to Sustainable Profits in the New Economy(Palgrave Macmillan). Closing Keynote Address - Changing the World One Equation at a Time
Sunday, October 15, 2017, 8:30 am - 9:30 am

Deborah Berebichez

Dr. Berebichez’ is currently the Chief Data Scientist at Metis in NY. At Metis she leads the creation and growth of exceptional data science training opportunities. Her responsibilities include ensuring the excellence of Metis’ data science bootcamps, corporate training, professional development as well as online programs. Dr. Berebichez is also the co-host of Discovery Channel's Outrageous Acts of Science TV show (2012-present). She is an active contributor to the national data science ecosystem through frequent public speaking and presentations on panels at data science conferences. Debbie grew up in a conservative community in Mexico City that discouraged girls from pursuing a career in science, technology or engineering. From an early age she showed a deep interest in astronomy, which led to her love of physics. While this interest was endearing in elementary school, by the time she reached high school, it was viewed as inappropriate. She was told that if she were too smart, she would never be liked and that it would be better for her to pursue a feminine career. But she wanted to understand how the world works, so she defied her parents and friends and studied physics becoming the first Mexican woman to graduate with a PhD in physics from Stanford . In this presentation, she shares the ups and downs of her path, which led her to becoming a physicist, a TV host of science programs and a mentor to young women who want to become scientists, and shows how all of us all can remove barriers and help young people do science today.
