Environmental Literacy and Advocacy Day

Thursday, November 5, 2026 | 8:00 am – 5:00 pm
Sheraton Grand Hotel, Sacramento

Presenters: Gita Dunhill, Andy Jones, Elisabeth Sellinger, Brendan Talwar, Andra Yeghoian, and Sarah Whiting

Join science educators from across California for an engaging day of learning, collaboration, and action focused on advancing environmental literacy. CASE’s Environmental Literacy and Advocacy Day brings together classroom teachers, instructional coaches, site and district administrators, county office leaders, STEM coordinators, and other education leaders to explore current environmental challenges alongside scientists and researchers, translate cutting-edge research into meaningful NGSS-aligned learning experiences, and, with leadership from Ten Strands, discover practical strategies for environmental literacy advocacy and civic engagement. Participants will leave with new ideas, partnerships, and opportunities to strengthen environmental literacy in classrooms, schools, districts, and communities.

What to Expect

  • Learn from scientists and researchers studying California's current environmental challenges.
  • Collaborate with fellow educators to connect current research to classroom learning through the NGSS, Common Core, and Environmental Principles and Concepts standards.
  • Explore practical strategies for integrating environmental literacy and civic engagement across TK-12.
  • Learn from Ten Strands about "Little 'a' advocacy" and "Big 'A' Advocacy," and how educators can engage in environmental literacy efforts at the local and statewide levels.
  • Discover examples of successful youth civic engagement and advocacy that can inspire student voice and action.
  • Connect with colleagues from across California while exploring opportunities to strengthen environmental literacy through leadership, collaboration, and advocacy.

Please Note: This program is open to all educators at all levels of their educational journey. This is NOT a leadership day, it is open for everyone, including non-science educators.
