Dr. Stuart Sumida, Biology Professor
Stuart Sumida will discuss the powerful intersections of science and art with examples from his experience as an anatomical and scientific consultant in animated motion pictures, movie special effects, video game design, and theme park ride construction. He will describe how each enhances the other, while simultaneously pulling artists toward science education and scientists toward the humanities and story-telling.

Opening Keynote Speaker
Our guest speaker Diana Trujillo is a Space Explorer and Aerospace Engineer currently serving as a Mission Lead for the Mars Perseverance Mission, which is helping NASA determine if ancient life ever existed on the surface of Mars. Born and raised in Colombia, Diana immigrated to the United States at the age of 17, with the goal of pursuing her dream of working in the Science field. She has contributed to Human and Robotic Space Exploration missions including Cygnus, International Space Station resupply vehicle, the Constellation Program, the Mars Curiosity rover, the Mars Perseverance rover, and the Mars Ingenuity helicopter. Come learn about her journey from Cali-Colombia to Mars.

Join Dr. Chris Lowe as he talks about the role of technology, engineering and computer science in shark research. The idea is that kids may be interested in sharks, don’t necessary have to be interested in biology and can be involved through engineering, math, and comp sci. Teachers may be interested to see that we’re interested in students that are discipline cross-overs.
